What’s with Mahindra Bolero Neo?

Taking a cue from the setback of TUV 300, Mahindra came up with Bolero Neo in July 2021. Bolero Neo is a balance between TUV 300 and Bolero. This sub-compact SUV is identified as an updated version of Mahindra TUV300, while it draws the rough driving traits from Bolero. The name ‘Bolero’ is the center of attraction as sturdiness of Bolero is still engrossed in minds across India.

Bolero Neo is power packed with mHawkdiesel engine of 1493 cc. It is available in Manual transmission. Its siblings are – Bolero NeoN4, N8, N10 and N10 (Option). It is manufactured on ladder frame design same as the Scorpio and Thar. The price band is Rs. 8.48 - 10.69 Lakh (ex-showroom).

Let us zoom into the detailed specification.

Mahindra Bolero Neo-Outer Appearance

The makers have very candidly imitated some outer drawings of Bolero. Both versions of the Bolero are of the same length but the Neo is wider. The height of Bolero Neo is shrunk by 20mm while the bonnet line has fallen by 20mm over the TUV300. Bolero Neo has curved edges compared to the boxier Bolero which makes it look more premium. These alterations have given it a proportionate look. There is a grey cladding running along the length of the SUV. Like the previous Bolero, it has a spare wheel attached to the back door, with the addition of spare wheel cover over it. The ground clearance is nicely adapted from previous Bolero which is much better than other sub-compact SUVs in this price range. Footboard is offered in mid to top variants of the SUV.

Headlamps are simple square kind withDaytime Running Lights (DRLs) running over the upper edge of the headlamps. Fog lights are round. Mahindra vertical chrome bars below bumper rekindles the Bolero memories.

Mahindra Bolero Neo - The Inside

Bolero Neo is as tough as the old Bolero from outside but it has an improved interior. This is likely to influence urban buyers, especially Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.

The Bolero Neo cabin matches with that of the TUV 300. The finishing on cabin is reasonable with shiny hard plastic on the center console and doors. The front seats have ample space between them. The seats are broad and have suitable thigh support. There are separate arm rests for the driver and co-passenger. The middle row can be happily shared among three people. When the sharing is between two, a drop down from the seat can be used as an arm rest. There is liberal head room while the leg room is a bit restraining. The extreme back has two jump seats. These remain ineffective for adults while kids may enjoy the space. The leg room is quite discomforting. These seats are foldable, therefore increasing the boot space. The seat belts are absent here. Windows are openable to a few inches outside.

How cool is the driving in Neo?

The Bolero Neo is driven by the identical 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-diesel as in the TUV300. This is imitative of the Bolero's motor. Torque has risen by 20 Nm to 260 Nm though. This is expected to expand its load carrying capacity. The gear harmonizes well with this sort of torque. Though, the gear stick vibrates at start of the SUV. The engine is charming up till 2,500 rmp, crossing which a rattling sound can be heard. Low to medium speed working is easy as the entire 260Nm is achieved. The torque build up in city or highways is solid and does not make Bolero Neo nervous. However, a lighter steering at slow speeds could have made parking and navigation in congested areas peaceful.

There is appreciation to the toughness Bolero Neo adds. It is able to tackle undulating terrain with an effective suspension.  It is not a 4 wheel drive (4WD), yet the new Easton-sourced mechanical locking differential, Mahindra calls it Multi Terrain Technology, is fair enough. The system spreads the torque uniformly across both rear wheels when it discovers a 100 rpm distinction in wheel speeds. This system is quite practical to tackle countryside or off road trail.

Features- Digital and Otherwise

Mahindra as honestly presented Bolero Neo as an authoritative compact SUV on off road tracks. This makes it relatively mediocre from inside when compared to its competitors- Hyundai Verna, Kia Sonet, Ford EcoSport, Tata Nexon. Yet, not everything is antique in technology. There is a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth. The system in driver’s favor are- steering fitted audio control, steering adjustment, driver’s seat height adjustment, electronically set Outer Rear View Mirror (ORVM) and key less entry.

Some safety feature integrated are, dual airbags, ABS, Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), Corner Brake Control and Static Bending Headlights.  However, Mahindra should have retained Reverse Camera from TUV 300. It should have also offered Auto and Apple Car play with the infotainment.
